A grant program for hospice patients will not jeopardize an organization's exempt status.
Nonprofit and Church Legal Trends - Free Edition - March April 2007 (free edition)
A hospital operated a hospice program but decided to discontinue it. However, when it was discontinued it could identify about $250,000 in unspent donations to support the program. The Board has proposed to establish a grant program for patients of the hospital who must enter hospice programs elsewhere. A committee would be appointed to oversee disbursements based on need and hardship. Does this grant program jeopardize the hospital’s exempt status? No, this alternative program is close enough to the original purpose of the gift and is in compliance with rules regarding grants to individuals.
