Many youth sports leagues are under investigation by the IRS for calling coaches, referees, and umpires “independent contractors” rather than employees, as they are classified under IRS rules. Violation of this definition has a particular youth soccer organization facing up to $334,441.00 in back taxes. The appeal of this decision was still pending at the time of this publication.
